Roadtest: HONOR MagicBook 16

As an itinerant tech conference goer (and commensurately frequent flyer to my eco-footprint-shame), I wear out the following faster than most “normal” people. <ul class="default-list"> <li style="font-weight: 400">Shoes (a pair lasts no more than around 6 months).</li> <li style="font-weight: 400">Monitor extender screens (a couple of years).</li> <li style="font-weight: 400">In-flight wheelie “rollaboard” bags (a year at best).</li> <li style="font-weight: 400">Laptops (a couple of years, depending on build quality).</li> <li style="font-weight: 400">Mouse (five years).</li> </ul> Due to the combined pressures of heavy use, the always-light hand of airport security screeners and countless episodes of bashing, most of these items wear out fast. As such, I was happy to get hold of the HONOR MagicBook 16 for a test use period to take on my travels. This HONOR (hereafter written as Honor) MagicBook 16 is aimed for daily office use and features a an Intel Core Ultra 5 / AMD Ryzen 5 processor combo. It also has 16GB / 512GB SSD and weighs in at ~1.53 kg. <section class="section main-article-chapter" data-menu-title="Power-button fingerprint scanner"> <h2 class="section-title">Power-button fingerprint scanner</h2> The webcam is a standard 720p/1080p and it works just fine. The launch of HonorMagicBook 16 is a testament to Honor’s continuous efforts to innovate and introduce industry-leading laptops through the MagicBook portfolio,” said George Zhao, CEO of Honor Device Co, Ltd. “With the Honor MagicBook 16, we offer users a powerful device that packs intelligent features and seamless connectivity in a sleek and streamlined design, delivering a premium user experience.” The MagicBook 16 features a 16.1-inch IPS anti-glare display with 5.1mm thin bezels, achieving a screen to body ratio of 87.3% and a wide 170o viewing angle. The device has a high refresh rate2 of up to 144Hz and that’s a good number for gaming or watching high-definition videos. </section> <section class="section main-article-chapter" data-menu-title="TÜV Low Blue Light"> <h2 class="section-title">TÜV Low Blue Light </h2> It is also equipped with TÜV Low Blue Light Certification to minimise emissions of harmful blue light to ensure enhanced eye protection and a comfortable viewing experience. <blockquote> “Designed to support heavy-duty and complex tasks, the Honor MagicBook 16 is equipped with 512GB storage and 16GB dual-channel RAM, allowing users to open multiple large files and switch between windows with ease. The Honor MagicBook 16 further boosts productivity with its built-in performance mode. By simply pressing Fn+P, the device’s overall performance increases by 43%7, allowing users to process heavy applications at ultra-fast speeds,” said the company, in a press statement. </blockquote> Featuring an intelligent cooling system with 2mm triple heat pipes, 75mm+ dual fans and 8 high-precision temperature sensors, this laptop dissipates heat quickly from the processor. It also supports multi-screen collaboration9 allowing users to multitask between different devices. Users can connect their smartphone with the laptop, dragging files across and making edits with one keyboard. Multi-screen collaboration also allows users to open three app windows from their smartphone onto their laptop screen at once, further enhancing productivity. </section> <section class="section main-article-chapter" data-menu-title="Battery power & keyboard"> <h2 class="section-title">Battery power & keyboard</h2> A dual-antenna Wi-Fi and multiple transmitters and receivers support Wi-Fi 6. For my long-term plane-located work sessions, the battery life is good i.e. the MagicBook 16 has a 56Wh battery, so that means up to 8 hours of power for daily office work and around the same (although its said to be 8.8 hours) when tasked with local 1080P video playback12. A surprising bonus: a 65W portable super charger means the Honor MagicBook 16 can be charged up to 50% within 30 minutes13 and to 100% in approximately 1.5 hours. When it comes to ports, it’s a case of 2×USB-C 3.2, 2×USB-A 3.2, one HDMI 2.0 and a 3.5 mm headset and microphone 2-in-1 jack. Its touchpad features an integrated NFC tag, enabling connectivity between the laptop and Honor smartphones. </section> <section class="section main-article-chapter" data-menu-title="Overall look and feel"> <h2 class="section-title">Overall look and feel</h2> The device is equipped with a full-size backlit keyboard to deliver what Honor says is a comfortable typing experience. That’s actually my one complaint about the unit i.e. I am too used to having the delete button at the extreme right top of my laptop and so, did we really need a numerical number pad to push all that out of line. Useful for accountants, yes, but for the average user, this feels a design flaw to me. Despite this, the overall feel is very nice and pretty slick... and that comes down, literally, to how much faster web pages are served when browsing and working, which is almost all of what I do with the device.
